Why are ppl so shocked to find out I'm an atheist?

I was raised in a Christian home, and I believe many of the basics tenants can apply. Do unto others, hey thats a good one. I just think that religion has done more harm than it as done good. I once talked with a person who asked me 'where do you get your moral center', I said I did not need some book filled with rape, murder, child killing, etc to help me find a moral center. I challenged him to show me why is morals where better than mine. I try to help the poor when i can, I pay my taxes, I pay for schools when I'll never have a child attend, so how is any morals that cost you 10% of our salary any better? I don't condemn people for having the need to believe any something that cannot be explained, or that they feel. I just think that organized religion has moved more towards a business than the tenants of the book they so highly refer too.
I know the bible ... why has their Beatitudes taken a back seat to the fire and brimstone? I guess it sells better from the pulpit.

Remember that atheism is a belief, just as theism is. Agnosticism is far more appropriate :)
